How to Make Applesauce

I had never made applesauce before last fall but at one point I found myself with way more apples than I knew what to do with. So I decided to try my hand at making homemade applesauce and with the help of one of my favorite kitchen gadgets, my Crock-Pot. This is a great way to use up excess apples and it is also a relatively healthy dessert if you want to avoid more sugary treats.


I use a weekly organic produce delivery service and during the fall I would receive apples and pears every week, so I actually used a combination of the two fruits in most of my batches and it comes out really flavorful. So don’t be afraid to try this with a combination of apples and pears and possibly even other fruit if you want to be adventurous!

Slow-cooker Applesauce


8 Apples (or apples/pears)
1/4 cup Brown Sugar
1 tsp Lemon Juice
1/4 tsp Ground Cinnamon


Just add all ingredients to your slow-cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours. You may have to break up a few chunks at the end but it should basically dissolve into applesauce all by itself. It is delicious hot and fresh out of the Crock-Pot  and would be amazing served hot over vanilla ice cream! Enjoy!
