Basic Chocolate Mug Cake

No matter how hard you try to eat healthy, sometimes a craving just hits for something sweet. One such craving hit last week and we didn’t have much to work with. But I came up with the perfect idea for a chocolate mug cake that we completely gobbled up.

If you haven’t tried microwavable mug cakes yet, now is the time for you to try it! We’ve tried a couple different recipes over the years, but when we finally got the hang of it we were able to throw together a simple and delicious recipe as a great foundation for a customizable dessert. And it’s ready in just a few minutes!




A lot of recipes have you mix up the batter in a separate container and then add it to the mug. However, I came up with a method where you make the batter right in the mug, so you don’t even need to use any other dishes. The key is to mix all your dry ingredients in the mug first, then add the wet ingredients and mix again. Then you just zap it for a couple minutes and you’re done! The result is an ooey, gooey chocolate cake that anyone will love.

We try not to eat a lot of sweets, so we didn’t have any mix-ins for these pictures this time. But in brainstorming for just a couple of minutes, we came up with this list of recommended candies and sweets that you can mix into your mug cake:
Chocolate Chips
Butterscotch Chips
Mini Reese’s
M&Ms
Peanut Butter M&Ms
Nuts




Or you could always top it with a sauce, whipped cream, or ice cream! It would be delicious with a scoop of vanilla ice cream thrown on top! Feel free to chef around and make it with whatever mix-ins or toppings you like, or just eat it plain. These chocolate mug cakes are delicious and satisfying all by themselves.

Instructions
  1. These amounts are for one mug cake but I usually make two at the same time. If you do, make sure you microwave them separately. I use slightly oversized coffee mugs so this would probably overflow in a small one.
  2. Mix together flour, sugars, cocoa, salt and baking powder in the mug.
  3. Add milk, oil, water, and vanilla and mix until just combined.
  4. Microwave for 2 minutes or until center is done. Time may vary according to mug shape and power.
